BookPALS Back to School!

September 26, 2014

They’re back to school! BookPALS in the Los Angeles area are back volunteering in classrooms from Ventura to Irvine, and most visit the same two classes every week! Lucky students!

They kicked off the new school year with a special workshop attended by over 100 volunteers at the SAG-AFTRA offices on August 16. This year new and veteran BookPALS were fortunate to have presentations given by BookPALS program coordinators from other cities. Coordinators were in town for the first coordinator conference in 10 years, so LA BookPALS learned from them techniques of using wordless picture books in the classroom and using special engagement tools for classrooms. Also, staff from Learning Ally in New Jersey came to Los Angeles to provide BookPALS with a Dyslexia Simulation that was rather unnerving but so very enlightening.

Book giveaways, door prizes, and lots of food made an instructional event a fun time for everyone to reconnect and head back to classes to inspire even more children to love to read!
