When Scott Wolf found out that he and wife Kelley were expecting their third child, it dropped him to a knee.

Now, with daughter Lucy Marie having celebrated her first birthday in May, the actor confesses to be continually awed by his brood, particularly his eldest son, Jackson Kayse.

“It’s remarkable. I’m learning a ton from this kid,” he told PEOPLE at Monday’s Annual L.A. Golf Classic, where he served as co-host.

“Jackson is super high-level, one of the most compassionate and empathetic human beings I’ll ever know.”

And it all starts with the way that Jackson interacts with his siblings, Lucy and their 2½-year-old brother, Miller William.

“Jack is just the best, he’s setting a great example for Miller, who will do anything that Jack does,” explains The Night Shift star.

“He really looks out for the two of them. He’s 6 years old, but it’s like having another half parent there. It’s incredible.”

Yet, according to the actor, it’s little Lucy who is showing signs of having a much daintier side than her big brothers.

“We had a party at the house and we her her smash cake on herself, but she was way more dignified than her brothers,” the 47-year-old says. “She just picked bites. Both of my sons just mashed frosting over their eyes. We were there with our video cameras waiting for it to happen and she didn’t do it, she just took little nibbles.”
